In an op-ed published in Monday's The Washington Post, First lady Michelle Obama urges Congress to pass the Child Nutrition Bill. If passed, the bill would require that school lunches and breakfasts contain less fat and salt, and more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. The bill could also help get rid of junk food in vending machines at schools. Michelle Obama writes, "The last thing parents need or want is to see the progress they're making at home lost during the school day." She adds that the bill should pass for the children who perhaps aren't reaching their potential because they aren't receiving the nutrition they need during the day. If passed, the bill would also allow more kids from low-income families to receive free or reduced-cost meals at school.
